Well, everything appears to be back to normal on "Grey's Anatomy" after that whole ferry boat incident. It's almost like Meredith didn't even "die"! With all of the regulars still living and breathing, it's time for them to refocus on what really matters: doomed relationships, drinking, and inappropriate sex.
I was glad to see my lighter-hearted "Grey's" back, but it seemed like things went back to pre-sweeps days a little too fast. It's a little like the whole clinic-opening-in-eight-days debacle — can't we all just have a moment to talk about how Meredith almost died? All of this is really just a way of stalling so I don't spoil the big, humongous, scream-at-your-TV moment that came at the end, though, so if you want to talk about that, read more
OK, guys: George and Izzie. I hate to invoke the signature "Grey's" phrase so early in the recap, but: seriously? I've always thought all the sweetness of their relationship came from them being friends without sexual tension, and to have them sleep together kind of kills that for me. On the other hand, if the writers were going to take that direction, I'm glad they went the drunken sex route rather than the "I've always had feelings for you" path. Also, if I'm not mistaken, this makes George — George! — the character who has slept with the most others (Meredith, Callie, Izzie). Even Mark Sloane isn't reaching those levels.
Meredith — who, yes, is back at work already — decides to use her mom’s death and her own "near-death whatever" to try to be nicer. "People are what matters," she deadpans to Izzie after Izzie yells at her for letting Alex move in. "Paint with all the colors of the wind." The kinder, gentler Meredith even agrees to have dinner with Thatcher and his wife, despite the fact that she ducks into a broom closet to avoid them.
Cristina has her own reason to hide: Colin Marlowe, her former professor-slash-boyfriend, who arrives at Seattle Grace as a candidate for chief. Burke gets suspicious that Cristina is just jumping from one powerful heart surgeon love interest to another, especially when he finds out Cristina and Marlowe were together for three years, until one day Cristina just decided it was over. Burke tells Cristina that if she’s just marrying him to placate him, he wants no part of it, and in the end, Cristina seems to sincerely wonder whether she’s screwing up her engagement on purpose.
But their troubles seem small compared to George and Callie. George finally gets around to asking Callie how she can afford for them to stay in the hotel, and Callie admits gets boatloads of money from her parents. George yells at her for making him pay his share when she's practically an heiress; Callie says this must be about Izzie, who clearly has feelings for George. It’s pretty much every argument they’ve ever had wrapped up into one, and it ends with George getting kicked out of the hotel room.
Izzie is assigned to a patient who has a bullet stuck in his shoulder from being shot by his own men during war, and he's devastated that when the bullet finally comes out, it's too worn down to prove it. Izzie tells him there's something to be said for letting go, and of course she's talking about Denny. Meanwhile, all of the other attendings continue to bicker like children in the race for chief. The surgery plotlines seemed to be lessons about pushing people too hard: Alex recommends that Jane Doe have a surgery that nearly kills her baby, and Derek almost loses an old friend when he attempts a radical procedure.

Meredith's dinner goes fine until Thatcher confuses a childhood picture of her with one of his other daughter. Luckily, the power goes out, allowing Thatcher to escape to the basement while Meredith and Susan bond. Thatcher and Meredith eventually have a tender moment, when he fixes the porch swing that hasn't worked since Meredith was a kid.
George comes to Izzie with liquor and a request that she get over her problems with George's marriage, because George is having problems with his marriage and he needs Izzie to fix them. They get drunk, and George confesses that Callie thinks Izzie has feelings for George! How crazy is that! Cue sex eyes. The last thing we see is Izzie waking up in bed, naked (she checks under the covers to be sure, hilariously), with George next to her. Uh-oh.

Haha, great recap! I cant believe George got together with her. I totally saw it coming when he whipped out the bottle of alchy.
1I am about ready to stop watching this show altogether. The George & Izzie hook up was such CRAPPY writing in my opinion. Having 2 main characters on a show hook up is usually a sign that they couldn't think of anything else. Couldn't we have enjoyed George and Callie's marriage a little longer before one of them slept with someone else? Seriously? I am so sick of television shows where the major plot device is who is having sex with who, and flaunting infedelity as something humorous. I am over it.
2Boo boo boo. Why do I keep watching this show? These characters remind me of 16-year-olds. I used to really like George but that was before he retreated in the land of Kindergarten where if one thing gets out of place, he flips out! He seriously needs to calm down or be treated for some sort of mental disorder. Plus, I just hate the fact that he would cheat on Callie, who so does not deserve that. I'm glad Mer grew some balls and had dinner with the fam. And why are all the doctors at Seattle Grace so unprofessional? Who fights out in the hallways like that? Are there seriously doctors in real life who act this way? It saddens me and scares me that they pay more attention to the pettiness in their lives than they do to their patients. GAH!
3yiddidea - "flaunting infedelity as something humorous" Well said. As someone who has dealt with infidelity, there is nothing humorous about it.
4buzz... great recap, as always... but this show has gotten to be too much for me. it's SO over the top, and not really in a good way any more....
5Thanks Laurie. I agree with everything you said too. The show used to be clever and interesting, but now it has reverted to the same crap that we can see during Daytime Soaps, just slightly better acted.
6Great recap, Buzz! You're so right about everything moving back to "normal" so quickly. The pacing of last night's episode seemed right, but the plot lines were predictable, especially the Izzy-George hook up at the end. Izzy's checking under the covers was cute though. I'm a little worried that they are trying to write toward the big spin off show and are losing site of what makes *this* show work so well. Overall, I wasn't terribly disappointed with last night's episode, maybe because I'm just glad the whole ferry boat saga is over!
7I actually yelled "NO!" at the TV like 6 times at the end of the show, haha. I think it's horrible that Izzie & George slept together. This show is losing everything I thought was great about it. No doubt, I'm still addicted, but it's not as intriguing to watch anymore.
8Buzz, Great Recap! Although I hate waiting all day Friday for it! I seem to be in the minority so far here in that I liked the George, Izzie, hook-up. I am glad to have something (feelings for George)to explain how incredably annoying she has been about his marriage. No true friend would act like like that. There is much more love and respect between George and Izzie than has ever been between George and his poor wife. George has just never been that into Callie. Def. not the way he was into Meredith. I think Callie is right about him choosing his friends over her, but man she is aggressive in general. I think that is really suspect that they are married and she never told him about the money. But then again he probably should have figured something was up.
9And oh my,,,, when is something at all interesting going to happen between Derek and Meredith??? Why have they gotten sooo boring together?? Anyway Go George and Izzie! (NOT that Infidelity in real life is humorous at all, for those of you who mentioned that you have been hurt by it!!!!!!!!!! I sanction it just in TV land where pursuit of "true love" is a real thing). Callie is going to be pissed. I hope they don't make Izzie 'regret' the incident right away cira. Meredith.
Yeah the show ended with me and my group of friends watching it utterly grossed out.
10I thought the hour long episode dragged on and on....this show is becoming more like Desperate Housewives and less an intelligent clever drama. I don't know what is with the writers, but I agree, it's lost it's intrigue.
I dont' get why Izzy has to jump from karev to Denny to George? Couldn't they have her seek love in maybe finding her daughter she gave up or her mom or something....because her sleeping with George just bothers me.
I don't get what is wrong with Karev's patients face but I find it ironic that he might be falling for her....or is it just that writers thought it went so well with Denny they might as well try it again and drag out that plot.
Christina and Burke actually could've been more interesting....but that Marlowe guy better not be permament, he just doesn't do anything for me.
I did like how Meredith and her father weren't miraculously reunited after her brush with death and her mother's passing....but it's still frustrating to watch and you just want to hit upside and the head and say, you can't actually think that hating his is better than just dealing with him?
I'm just waiting for a flaw of Derek's....he's been too perfect and idolized, something needs to go wrong because he's looking too perfect.
Who knows how things are going to end, but I think either they need to pay the actors less and the writer's more or something. I mean, for what the show is making, it needs to maintain itself and not get so ridiculous.
11slumming - I am all for the "pursuit of true love" on tv and in real life, but you should get out of the relationship you are in before moving on to someone else. Perhaps I am dreaming big, but I think it would be nice if the writers of these popular television shows would give the characters just a tad bit of honor.
12Derek is my least favorite character - I find his storylines so boring and his character so flat and one-dimensional. It is like the show won't take risks with his character to tarnish the Dr. McDreamy thing. Yawn.
13Surprisingly, Derek annoys me more than Izzy does, who is just ridiculous. And even though I totally called the Izzy/George hook-up (not to be a jerk, but I did), it still pisses me off. Poor Callie. I'm find with the idea of trouble in her marriage but this seems cruel.
Meredith and her father, Alex and Jane Doe, Cristina's love triangle = all entertaining, no complaints from me. (Thank goodness for my best friend - I couldn't place who the actor playing Marlow was and then she solved it for me - he was the sheriff of nottingham from Mel Brooks' Men in Tights)
Geri, good point. The 'thing' between Karev and his pregnant patient was too Denny-esque for my tastes. It would be sweet of him to fall for her though, since he was going to get into plastics and has been so superficial and slutty in the show.
14Izzie is a bad bad gurl!!! she slept with george!!! bad! well, they were drunk. and ppl tend 2 do pretty stupid things when they're drunk. i cant wait 2 c wat happens if callie ever finds out!
15I've seen tension between George and Izzie from the beginning and I've always wanted them to get together. I hope they realize they have feelings for each other after this. I think I am mainly rooting for them because I fell for my best friend 3 years ago and we're now engaged, so I have a big love for watching friends fall in love. =) I personally love the show just as much as I did when it first started and it makes me sad to see all these people who say they hate it now.
16I was shocked when George and Izzi slept together
then Christina thinks
marriage is stupid!!
What is up with that??? I always thought she wasn't the marry kind... Oh well!

17Behind every great man, there's a woman rolling her eyes
I think that Grey's has gone the 90210 incestuous-friends route when ALL of the characters officially sleep with everyone else. I still can't believe they had George sleep with Izzie. I mean, that's a BAD plot turn. And not even in an interesting way.
18I dont think Alex will fall for Jane Doe. He mentions in the episode that she reminded him of his sister, so I am guessing we will be hearing more of his back story in the upcoming weeks.
19I am still pulling for an Alex/Addison hook-up, but I doubt that will happen, particularly with her leaving the show. Darn.
Yiddidea, You do make a good point about hoping for some integrity (also a good point about wondering if that ideal might be shooting a little high for TV today- a climate that humiliation of people and characters gets the highest ratings!) It is offensive how on television and the media in general infidelity is just par for the course these days- a mentality that for sure influences the culture at large. I wanted to add that in my original post I put the "pursuit of true love" in relation to how it is portrayed on TV in quotes just the notion of "true love" as it is portrayed is so distorted and doesn't exist in real life, long term relationships. This notion of a perfect, life long, passionate, love never disturbed by complete boredom, or interest in other people is only a fantasy. The more people buy into it I think the more they are likely to have affairs looking for it in real life! That being said for some reason I just love to watch them trying for it on TV! Sorry for the long post! I am such a confused and conflicted romantic/ anti-romantic I guess.
20George and Izzie? H--- no !!!!! He's a married man. Couples fight about money. I feel George was happy with Callie, I'm not sure he'd be happy with Izzie.
21I also felt like there should have been a better transition from the whole ferry debacle/Mer's near death/her mom's death back to a normal Seattle Grace. I have to say that one of the most annoying parts of this episode to me was when Derek was talking to Mer's dad in the laundry room, and he sort of told her dad that everything wasn't ok with them, but she was worth it. I jut found a conversation of that sort so stupid and fake when supposedly he had just pulled her lifeless body from the water and gone through a near death experience with her. The whole Izzie/George hookup was sooo WRONG! And yet as soon as he walked in with a bottle of booze it was inevitable. I loved the scene with Christina and Mer in bed, and I am interested in the dynamic of Alex living in the house. Overall, I feel let down by the show lately. *sigh*
22kellyanne, I totally agree with your point about Derek and Thatcher! and you know what else was weird to me? That Thatcher never asked Mere how she was doing following her own near-death experience -- just how she was doing post-Ellis. I know he's supposed to be a clueless dad, but I think that was more in the writing overall, because there were few acknowledgments of the "drowning" in last night's episode overall.
23I LOVE Grey's, but last night's episode sucked. The past couple of episodes just haven't been what the show used to be but I didn't want to admit it until last night. It's the same stuff over and over. Yes, Meredith's weird about family, as always. Cristina doesn't want to get married and has a hard time being close with Burke, as always. Izzie is annoying (and also now kind of slutty) as always. Derek is boring and dependable, as always. George was confused, as always. And George and Callie have now had the exact same argument the past at least 5 shows!
They really need to start adding some new storylines and character flaws/traits. I can't take any more of the same thing repeated over and over again!
24This show has totally lost its' spark. The only thing that kept me interested last night was Alex/Jane Doe. I love how they're getting Alex out of typical *sshole mode.
25Shondra (the writer) thinks she is so fabulous, etc. and she completely blew it in my opinion.. the ferry -boat ordeal really didn't do any favors for this show, everything that happend, all the drama, Meredith being DEAD for like 8 hours and the coming back to life, talking, and then in this episode, everything being 100% back to normal, and NO ONE ADDRESSING THE FACT THAT IT WAS AN ATTEMPT TO KILL HERSELF. it's just stupid, unrealistic, and poor writing, a way to keep this going would have been to at least have her in a coma, or still in the hospital, etc! i really don't know why she thought that was a great idea.. I was bored by this episode, and it was too predictable that izzy and george would hook up, I think the show is literally sinking and if they don't get their crap straight, people are going to get fed up.. Especially considering they want to launch spin-off, they need to keep this one straight before starting something new.
26OH and the "Jane Doe" is so stupid.. WHERE IS EVERYONE ELSE FROM THE FERRY?! she is the ONLY one left, and no one has claimed her?! oh and she can talk, think, move, etc. SHE HAD AN EFFING POLE FALL ON HER HEAD..
27I can't wait for Jane Doe to finally stop looking like an ape.. I hope she's this smoking hot girl that becomes Karev's new love!!
I didn't get what Derek was saying in the laundry room - problems, seriously? This is going to turn into something big that will knock Mer off her 'love the people' kick and back into her cynical self..
AND WTF - Did Mere not tell Izzy she saw Denny? I thought this would turn into a bonding sesh between them..
And, infidelity isn't a new plot on the show.. Addison and McSteamy, Derek and Meredith? I am excited to see the fall out next week when George and Izzy have to come clean and deal..
28PhatE...I agree with EVERYTHING you said in your first post. The second one - I guess she was the only ferry victim left to continue a story with. That mom found her kid, that creepy girl found her mom, the guy with the car was rescued,...I think that's it.
I really do think Shonda Rhimes' talent is burning out quickly.
29I think Sara Ramirez is a great actress, but I hate her Callie character, so I have to say I was happy George cheated on her. I thought the Cristina wedding issue was very funny b/c I feel the exact same way about the wedding ceremony. I want to be married and all, but the actual ceremony I am only doing to placate the fiance.
30All I have to say is that the last few episodes have felt like a soap opera and less like the clever show this started out being. It was so unnecessary to have George cheat on Callie. I completely reject Izzie and George. It's just crap and I almost think they are making Izzie unlikeable on purpose.
to Thursday's episode.
31OK, I have a serious question, and it's not me being an ass, I'm just really looking for an answer/opinion here: when was this show clever and not soap opera-ish? It's always, from the first episode, been about attractive people drinking too much, hooking up with each other and acting like children, right? I would love other opinions on this.
32I enjoyed this episode more than I have in a long time because it was back to being kinda silly and kinda cute and kinda funny. Yes, it's ridiculous that everyone is sleeping with each other and yelling in the halls and escaping death twice and whatnot, but it's a TV show: this is what they do. It's not supposed to be real.
Let's take a count... (let me know if I'm mistaken)
Meredith : McDreamy, O'Malley, McSteamy, Chris O'Donnell (forgot his name) (4)
McDreamy: Meredith, Addison (2)
McSteamy: Addison, Meredith, Callie (3)
George: Meredith, Callie, Izzie (3)
Izzie: Karev, Denny??, George (2 or 3)
Callie: McSteamy, George (2)
Addison: McDreamy, McSteamy (2)
No, I believe Meredith is still the clear winner. But yeah, I really hate when the writers just resort to characters just sleeping with each other as some sort of "juicy twist". Good thing they're doctors on the show or else they might be swapping a whole lotta STDs. George hooking up with Izzie just totally compromises his wholesome character and I have a feeling his marriage won't survive this. I was hoping Callie would be the "one" for him even throughout all the fights they've had.
33Wait, when did Meredith and McSteamy hook up? I might have blinked and missed it. Anyway, I want to see more development in the back stories of everybody - like Izzy's kid, Alex's home life, etc...
34When did Izzy have a kid? I don't remember that at all.
35Umm... Meredith and McSteamy hooked up (I think) right after she broke up with McDreamy and when McSteamy first arrived at Seattle Grace.
Meredith never hooked up with McSteamy. They flirted a bit but never hooked up.
36Meredith : McDreamy, O'Malley, That Indian guy from Heroes who had the penis problem afterwards, Chris O'Donnell (forgot his name) (4)
McDreamy: Meredith, Addison (2)
McSteamy: Addison, Callie (2)
George: Olivia, Meredith, Callie, Izzie (4)
Izzie: Karev, George (2) -- I think if Izzy slept with Denny she would have killed him.
Callie: McSteamy, George (2)
Addison: McDreamy, McSteamy (2)
Infidelity count:
37Chief w/ Meredith's mom
Meredith's mom with Chief
Addison with McSteamy
McDreamy with Meredith
George with Izzie
....so that's pretty much every married couple on the show except Bailey.
Wow, Luxifer, I totally forgot about George and Olivia. He really IS quite the stud.
38wait... who is olivia? it doesn't ring a bell for me...
and when did meredith sleep with
suresh? doood i'm so lost!
39Olivia was when Karev spread the crabs around to everyone right?
40Olivia is the kind of annoying red headed nurse with syphilis.
41hmm.. i must've totally missed that bc none of that rings a bell.
42Izzy is really starting to make me upset...I didn't start watching Grey's until season three and I realize that killing your finance is life-alteringly traumatic, however it does not give you the right to be super b*tch. George is in the wrong as well of course, but I feel like a lot of the strain on his and Callie's marriage is Izzy's fault.
43Great recap....and I am still trying to understand how Callie went from sleeping in the basement of the hospital to Merredith's house and now in an expensive hotel...and now her father show's up? What is going on with the writers. And I also agree it is getting more and more daytime soap operaie than prime time..I don't like the infidelity either. And Christina's old "flame, teacher, whatever" was also the new owner of Cheers (the series) and Christie Alley's boyfriend, can't remember their names, who would nvr commit to marrying her....ok, I'm going back to ER. I am curious about McSteamy and Addison to see how they end up.
