As the title would suggest, this episode of "Grey's Anatomy" was all about desire and where it lands you — which, if the show can be believed, is a big, fat nowhere. Everyone saw their desires backfire this time, setting up a lot of heartache for the final episodes of the season, so for all the details (plus a TON of pictures),
First, I must address the penis fish. Yes, it's a bit obvious to have a guy who has an affair get a carnivorous fish stuck in his unmentionables, and usually I hate it when the medical cases are too perfectly related to the interns' lives. But I have to give them a pass on the penis fish. Not only did it lead to some of the best lines of the night — Mere's "It's no fish in my hoohoo, but it's certainly not an easy ride," for one — but it's just. So. Nasty.
I think "Grey's" has become my penis fish. Like Izzie said to George, it should give me a lot of joy, but often it feels like there's something's chewing up my insides. And while I thought this episode was OK overall, some of it was just too much.

Really, what I'm talking about is Izzie and George. First, they're working together with a guy who wants to be with a girl so much that he feels like he's on fire whenever she's around. Then, George has to deal with Larry-the-board-chairman's mistress. And then, Larry's wife tells George that she knows about Larry's affair — "The wife always knows." Add to that Callie stumbling on George and Izzie at the precise moment when George is shoving wedding cake into Izzie's mouth, and the plotline started to feel like a million anvils bonking me on the head.
I loved Callie telling Izzie off in the elevator, though; she really wants George back, though I'm not sure she actually had him to start with. And the Callie-Addison scene was awesome, with Addison telling Callie that if she's obsessing over all the time Izzie is spending with George, she probably has a reason to worry. And I'm curious to see if George will really transfer to Mercy West. Would that even solve anything?
While we're on the topic of Addison, it's time to talk about the Addisex. I loved Ava serving as the gossip hub of Seattle Grace, but her passing out before she could tell Alex the latest Addison scoop was, again, a bit much. It hardly mattered, though, because Addison took matters into her own hands and jumped Alex in the closet. That scene made me a little angry — I so don't want Addison to be the person who kisses an intern in the hallway — but I was also curious to see what would happen when they got together. And the answer is: nothing. Alex doesn't want her, and Addison wants more than hot sex in the closet. Plus, Mark isn't fighting for her; saying he gave into sex before the 60 days were up was an easy out, but it was the right move. I loved Addison's wistful glance back at Seattle Grace as she walked out — almost like she's about to leave for LA, or something.
Meredith and Derek are a mess now, too — and I'm pretty happy about that. Meredith has developed "girlfriend GPS," but Derek is pulling back. And I was glad he was able to overlook the fact that naked Meredith had climbed into his bed and say what someone has been needing to say for weeks: that he spent the scariest hour of his life trying to breathe for her after she let herself drown, and he's not sure he can keep breathing for her forever.
Burke and Cristina seem to be the only happy ones right now — and even then, I'm not sure if happy is the word. She could barely be bothered with his cake-tasting (I loved Bailey walking away with a whole cake), yet in the end they both settled on red velvet, and Cristina finally ditched her studying to make out with him (albeit only after he forced the flash cards out of her hand).
The Chief and Bailey had some good moments this time around, too (finally!). Larry gave the Chief a lot to think about, and now I'm not so sure he's going to retire after all. Meanwhile, he's trying to give Bailey a warning, telling her that she needs to step back before she, too, loses touch with her family. It will be interesting to see what happens with the race for chief resident, because Perky! Sydney seems ready to step in if Bailey backs down.
Next week: A very special "Grey's." Until then, everyone remember not to pee in the Amazon!

Post a CommentThis episode wasn't bad, although seriously, what's with the George&&Izzy? They just...I'm just shocked how hung up Izzy is.
I'm not sure that Alex didn't want Addison, but rather he resented being the default choice when she decided she wanted someone to "barbecue and play catch". I think that he wanted her to want him first and not be a default choice, even though we know that's probably not the case. You could tell he just didn't want the way he looked at her when she walked away leaving him to study.
This eppy pulled me in more than last week's.
next week is the season finale! that sucks
and is george really leaving?? cuz i cant imagin the show without him..
and couldnt u guys beleive how cloan told addison that he had slept with sum1!! how mature of him!

So, I understand that Derek has every right to tell Meredith that he can't be her lifeline. She knows how to swim, and she didn't. He gets to be angry. But for all the times that he chastised her for not communicating, he sure didn't do a good job either. He avoided her for days, let her ramble on and on about how she's "got gps" and never once interjected to fill her in on his thoughts. I think he's being selfish, personally.
don't worry, agrepina! next week is the special two-hour episode, but the finale isn't till May 17
Perhaps my expectations are too high but I am sort of over this show now. Meredith (maybe her character, maybe her acting) drives me nuts! I usually sit there thinking, "Oh, is it over because October Road is on right after and I much prefer that show?" Lame, I know! Say it!
I think Meredith gets slapped in the next episode though so I'm kind of looking forward to that one!
Great recap, Buzz! And, thanks for the photo gallery as well. Last night's epy had some of the old Grey's spark; glad to see Bailey almost back to normal. So... Meridith is Derek's penis fish; guess that explains his boorish behavior last night. At least we know what is eating away at him now. The Burke/Christina moments were among my favorites, especially when she chose his red velvet cake as the favorite. But I'm tiring of George's hangdog expressions and Izzie's monotone speech. Heading "West" won't really resolve the dilemma for George, but it's a nice metaphor anyway. Hope heading to LA is a better choice for Addison.
Sorry, the George and Izzy crap is still ruining this show for me.
However, the penis fish was
hilarious.
4 words - THE WIFE ALWAYS KNOWS
and why does meredith look like an old ugly bag lately
is it just me or has this show gone down hill? the ferry thing BLEW it, the meredith living through 8 hours of not breathing & then everything being back to normal blew it.
now the writers have pathetic attempts to acknowledge meredith basically tried to commit suicide, because they blew it taking 2 weeks off and then acting like nothing ever happend with meredit.. i am not sure if i am making sense, but try to follow this.. they then took 3 weeks off, and came back to this lousy crap. the acting is HORRIBLE, it's like they lost their touch, granted they have some good one-liners, and Christina is actually the only one that hasn't really changed, the entire show is about to hit the fan, with the rumours of george leaving, then burke, and addison, it's going to plummit. last night was UNREALISTIC.. AVA IS ANNOYING, why hasn't she been claimed?! it's amazing how the ferry incident is so far over, but she's still there. it seems like the thing between her and alex is something the writers are trying to play off of, but the truth is,she shouldn't be alive, it's about as unrealistic as meredith being dead for 8 hours, then the crap about her listening, the way she talks, and the horrible acting on the seizure, it's just too much! the show has lost it, it was doing soo good and they blew it, and unless they pull their crap together, it's going to be off in a year, or become ER.
Ugh! I can't believe everyone hates the Izzy/George saga. I love it. I think best friends falling in love is the best and the two of them together have always had this 'thing'. I love them together.. Grr to all of you. Hahaha.
I think the Karev/Sloane/Addison fallout was a perfect segway to the next eppy and the new show. Can't wait for next week!!
I loved this epidsode although I am over the george-izzy deal, cant they just have 2 people being friends without some sort of sexual tension-ALWAYS?!
I think karev does want addison but he is trying to be a hard @ss, i mean they are playing his character nicely and SLOWLY transitioning him..not just changing overnight. Sloan isnt just not fighting for her, he knows that is a losing battle. Addison looked GORGEOUS last night!
Derek needs to get rid of Merideth, i loved how he put it, not that it was about the job but it was about keeping her alive..that was great. However didnt keep him from first having sex with her! Jerk.
I am definitely sucked back into the Greys drama... but I am hating that Derek and Mere are "on the rocks" again, as they seem to be every 4-6 episodes. I hope they work it out and get freaking engaged already. They are the Carrie/Big of today, and we aaalll know theyre gonna be together eventually, so on with it!
Izzie and George are making me sick, the "passion" is so forced, and even tho Callie never really had him in the first place-she is far better for him.
Love Christina and Burke! too cute!
I cant imagine what the cliff hanger of this season will be.... Christina or Burke walking out on the wedding? Derek proposing? A death? Hmmmmm.....
Although the storylines/plot twists fell almost too much into place last night it was a good episode. I al so just like saying "penis fish"...
i don't want addison to leave! she's my favorite!!!
I was impressed with Mark Sloan and his depth/maturity! I think Derek is being a jerk and despite his 'breathing for Meredith' issue, the one that brought the whole thing to a head was Chief telling Derek that basically being chief will hurt Meredith and he won't let it happen. Derek just wants the job over Meredith. Which is fine, but he's put her through the wringer already!!
I really loved this episode
I really like the George and Izzie situation. I feel bad for Callie but like some of you mentioned, George has never really loved her. She deserves better. I like it when best friends fall in love. The fish in the penis thing was beyond stupid. Derek is acting horrible. His whole I can't breathe for you anymore speech was ridiculous to me- especially since he hasn't seemed especially in love with or concerned about Meredith anyway. He didn't seem to really be there that much for Meredith after her drowning at all- much less sustaining her. If anything she was asking for some space after that all happened rather than being overly dependant. He is pitifully using her depression as a way out of the relationship when it is really because he wants to be chief. I am tired of his act and would love Meredith to dump him. Bring back the vet! I love Meredith and want to see her loved. I was totally embarrassed for Addison after she had sex with Alex and he completely blew her off later.
Christina and Burke are my favorate, 'cause they have intensity baby!
I felt so bad for Mer last night, after she and Derek had sex, after his longwinded drowning speech... all she said was "I should go.", and then looks to him and waits for him to tell her to stay. I have sooo been there, and know the agonizing wait, hoping he will protest. But he didn't! Grrr. Be happy already, dammit! Also, does anyone else find it strange that Mer never told Izzie that she spoke (at length) with Denny while she was "dead"? That's been bugging me.
i mostly watch it for the cristina/burke relationship. i love those two together. and god...when is meredith and derek going to be finally happy together?!? i fell bad for callie, she deserves better
i don't get it. where's the love??? derek always somehow professes his love for meredith like all the time. then all of a sudden we're supposed to believe that he's not going to be there for her anymore. what happened to...
"I've been in love with you forever."
"From now on, you can expect that I'm gonna show up. Even if I yell. Even if you yell. I'm always gonna show up. Okay?"
"This is the happy ever after part. And in the happily ever after, the guy is there all the time, saying things and the girls love it!"
"And just for the record? I am your knight in shining whatever."
"She’s tough. She tries to hide it. She’s difficult. But if you make an effort, she’s worth it. She’s worth the effort."
now tell me, how did it go from that to...
"I came here to be chief. Meredith complicates that."
"You warned me she could become a problem."
and the final blow
sniff, sniff...
"I don't... I just... That day, when you came out of the water... trying to breathe for you. I love you, and I want you, but I don't know what to... you didn't swim. You didn't swim and you know how to. And I don't know if I can... I don't know if I wanna keep trying to breathe for you."
that was just sad. ellen pompeo conveyed the hurt so well in her acting that i felt the aching, like i couldn't breathe. i felt meredith's pain
